Latin actresses criticize Trump immigration policy at awards gala

During the Critics Choice Association’s Celebración of Cinema and Television gala in Los Angeles, Latin actresses Aimee Carrero and Judy Reyes used their acceptance speeches to criticize the immigration policies of the Trump administration.

Aimee Carrero, receiving the Best Supporting Actress award for the Apple TV+ series ‘Your Friends and Neighbors’, spoke about her upbringing in Miami with Puerto Rican and Dominican parents. She stated that while her parents succeeded in providing a better life, it has become ‘practically impossible’ for other Latino families to do the same under the current administration, which she claimed ‘intends to strip us of our own humanity.’

Judy Reyes, who received the Trailblazer award, also addressed the political climate. Highlighting the importance of representation, she stated that success provides a platform to tell stories of immigrants who are being ‘arrested, abused, deported, disappeared, violated and murdered.’ She urged those present to use their existence as ‘an act of disobedience.’
