Latin America and Caribbean doubles battery energy storage capacity

Battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity in Latin America and the Caribbean has doubled in less than a year. According to the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE), capacity rose from 1,683 megawatts (MW) in 2025 to 3,408 MW by August 2026.

Chile is the regional leader, accounting for approximately two-thirds of the total capacity with 2,291 MW currently in operation. When including projects in testing and construction, Chile's total capacity reaches approximately 9.6 gigawatts (GW).

Other regional developments include: • Mexico: Planning to incorporate 2,216 MW by 2030 via the Federal Electricity Commission. • Argentina: Has awarded more than 1,400 MW through competitive mechanisms. • Honduras: Developing a 75 MW/300 MWh system to improve grid reliability. • Jamaica: Advancing with 110 MW/220 MWh of capacity linked to new renewable generation.
