Latin America and the Caribbean candidates lead UN Secretary-General race
Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) faces a significant diplomatic opportunity as the next United Nations Secretary-General is likely to emerge from the region. According to a Security Council survey from September 29, the top three candidates are Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett of Guyana, and Rafael Grossi of Argentina.
While a regional leader could use soft power to amplify the region's profile and support its institutions, the role is bound by the UN Charter and does not allow for direct policy implementation in favor of a specific origin. The primary challenge for LAC is its current lack of a unified regional agenda. To maximize the impact of a regional Secretary-General, the bloc must overcome internal fragmentation and establish common priorities before a final decision is made by the Council.
