Latin America develops Model Ecocide Law to combat environmental damage

Latin American organizations and experts are collaborating to develop a Model Ecocide Law. The initiative aims to create a unified legal framework to help harmonize the crime of ecocide within the national legislations of the region.

Led by Stop Ecocidio Internacional, the Centro Mexicano de Derecho Ambiental (CEMDA), and several academic institutions, the process includes regional public consultations and technical meetings. The goal is to adapt international definitions of ecocide to the specific social and legal realities of Latin America to prevent and punish massive ecosystem destruction and combat impunity.
