Latin America experiences a conservative political shift

Latin America is experiencing a notable conservative shift in recent elections, characterized by a move toward candidates promising increased order through strengthened police and military powers. This trend is evidenced by political developments in Chile, Peru, and Colombia.

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox attributes this regional turn to public exhaustion with populist left-wing policies that have failed to deliver results. Fox expressed support for the rise of right-wing governments in the region and is working on an initiative called ‘Alma de México’ to train new political leaders for democratic opposition parties. He also criticized the current institutional erosion in Mexico under the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Claudia Sheinbaum.
