Latin America faces high risk from natural disasters and seismic activity
Latin America is identified as one of the world's most vulnerable regions to natural disasters, according to the World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report. The region faces a diverse array of threats, including floods, droughts, storms, earthquakes, and landslides.
Geological factors play a significant role, as much of the region lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire. This area is characterized by the interaction of several tectonic plates, including the Nazca, South American, Caribbean, and Cocos plates. In countries like Colombia and Peru, seismic activity is driven by the subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American plate, while Venezuela's activity is linked to the boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates.
Experts note that while global earthquake statistics remain consistent, the impact of these events is exacerbated by social, economic, and environmental conditions. Climate change is expected to increase the frequency of extreme weather events, such as intense rainfall and prolonged droughts. Additionally, urban planning and the quality of construction materials are critical factors in determining the severity of damage during seismic events.
