Latin America Grapples with Bridge Repair and Funding Challenges
In Peru, the national road agency Provías warned it lacks the budget to replace 93 bridge structures at risk of collapse as the El Niño season approaches, with replacement costs exceeding S/4.6 billion. The agency, led by executive director Claudia Dávila, has asked the transport infrastructure regulator for contract amendments so private concessionaires can intervene, and has outlined a temporary plan of shoring and reinforcement for the most vulnerable bridges.
In Colombia, the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) began construction on the Trementino II bridge on 17 July, replacing a bridge that failed on 8 February after heavy rains. The new structure will feature a 22.5‑metre span, 9.5‑metre width and concrete caissons, with completion targeted for 23 January 2027. ANI coordinated the work with the Concesión Ruta al Mar consortium and performed hydraulic, geotechnical and other technical studies.
In Argentina’s Río Negro province, heavy rain has filled potholes on Route 22 between Puente 83 and Mastrocola near Cipolletti, obscuring hazards, causing long vehicle queues and increasing the risk of accidents, especially at night when lighting is poor.
