Latin America sees sharp rise in financial cybercrime complaints

Brazil reported a 28.4% increase in digital crime complaints in 2025, totaling 87,689 cases, according to SaferNet. The Central Bank of Brazil recorded 76 severe cyber incidents, up 29% from the previous year, including attacks on the Pix payment system that resulted in a R$100 million loss.

In Mexico, the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Service Users (Condusef) logged 43,871 fraud-related complaints in the first half of 2026, a 16.7% rise year‑on‑year. Traditional fraud cases grew 19.5% to 27,721, while virtual fraud rose 14.2% to 14,627. Almost 94% of complaints involved banks. The Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) and Condusef signed a collaboration agreement to improve information sharing for prevention and investigation of financial crimes.
