Brazil shifts right as Bolsonaro family challenges Workers’ Party dominance

Brazil is experiencing a significant political shift as the era of dominance by the left-wing Workers’ Party (PT) faces a major challenge. In the first round of the general election, the PT and its leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, were defeated by Flávio Bolsonaro and the Liberal Party (PL). Betting markets indicate a strong possibility of a Bolsonaro victory in the upcoming run-off on October 25th.

The Liberal Party has emerged as a powerful force, securing the largest congressional caucus since Brazil’s 1988 constitution and becoming the leading party in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais. This shift suggests a move toward right-wing policies that may prioritize business interests and potentially weaken environmental protections, particularly regarding the Amazon rainforest.

Conversely, supporters of the PT highlight the party’s historical role in social democracy and poverty reduction through initiatives like the Bolsa Família program. They argue that the party’s focus on infrastructure, housing, and social inclusion has been a pillar of Brazilian democracy and economic stability.
