Latin America urged to treat healthcare as strategic economic investment

Experts and health officials are advocating for a shift in how Latin America approaches healthcare, moving from viewing it as a public expense to treating it as a strategic economic investment. During a panel at the 15th Roche Press Day in San José, Costa Rica, specialists emphasized that improving health outcomes is essential for protecting human capital and driving regional productivity.

Data from the McKinsey Health Institute indicates that Latin American countries currently invest an average of 3.7% of their GDP in health, significantly lower than the 7.9% seen in high-income nations. Furthermore, only 5% of health budgets in the region are dedicated to disease prevention. Brad Herbig, Director of Health Data and Analytics at the McKinsey Health Institute, noted that strategic investment could potentially generate up to 7% of the region's GDP by improving population wellbeing and economic output.

Representatives from the World Bank Group highlighted that failing to fund healthcare does not eliminate costs but instead shifts the burden to families, businesses, and states. The discussion underscored that addressing chronic diseases and improving access to medical innovation are critical to preventing long-term economic losses and ensuring sustainable development across the region.
