Spain and Argentina navigate shifts in reproductive health access

Spain is moving to expand access to pharmacological abortion by incorporating it into the primary care service portfolio. Health Minister Mónica García announced that the Ministry of Health will initiate regulatory changes, including modifying the technical sheet for mifepristone to allow its use outside of hospitals and updating the royal decree for health center authorizations. This initiative aims to provide women with professional guidance and follow-up within their local health centers.

In Argentina, reproductive health services face significant challenges due to budget reductions. Reports indicate that state spending on sexual and reproductive health has decreased by 57% since Javier Milei assumed office in 2023. This reduction has led to a decrease in the procurement of contraceptives and essential supplies. Consequently, thirteen provinces have had to utilize their own budgets to maintain access to abortion services following the cessation of centralized national procurement. Despite these fiscal constraints, 87,603 voluntary and legal pregnancy interruptions were recorded across 20 Argentine provinces within the public health system in 2025.
