Latin American cities present urban transformation projects at international forums

The municipal government of Manizales, Colombia, has been selected to showcase its participatory urban‑planning initiative, “Manizales Diseña en Colectivo,” at the Festival International de Intervenciones Urbanas (FIIU Fest 11) in Lima, Peru, from 21 to 24 October. The project, developed through workshops, street walks and citizen dialogues, produced a set of technical guidelines for public‑space interventions in the mountain city, including specific recommendations for areas such as Parque Antonio Nariño and the historic centre.

Separately, the Inter‑American Development Bank and the Institute of Urban Research and Planning of Curitiba (Ippuc) hosted a workshop titled “A New Generation of Urban Transformations for Curitiba.” The event highlighted large‑scale regeneration cases from Boston (the Big Dig tunnel project), Madrid (the Madrid Río linear park) and Medellín (the Parques del Río), illustrating how major infrastructure works can reconnect fragmented urban areas, create new public spaces and promote sustainable mobility.

Both gatherings underline a growing regional focus on inclusive, large‑scale urban redesign as a tool for social and environmental resilience.
