Latin American diplomats address reproductive rights at UN
During the 63rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, representatives from Latin American nations addressed the interpretation of sexual and reproductive rights and gender concepts.
Mario Zamora, Costa Rica’s representative to the UN Human Rights Council, stated that these concepts and rights must be interpreted in accordance with the country’s existing constitutional and conventional guarantees. This position was expressed following the approval of resolutions, specifically regarding resolution L. 34, which covers the human right to water and sanitation and includes references to gender and reproductive rights.
In a related context, recent diplomatic statements from Colombian representatives at both the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations have prompted discussions regarding the status of sexual and reproductive rights in international law. Observers note that these rights are recognized through international human rights frameworks, treaty body observations, and various international and regional court rulings.
