Latin American feminist movements mobilize against rising right-wing influence
Feminist and trans movements in Latin America are organizing to counter the rise of right-wing political forces in the region. The 39th Plurinational Meeting of Women, Lesbians, Travestis, Trans, Bisexuals, Intersexuals, and Non-Binary people recently concluded in Córdoba, Argentina, drawing over 100,000 participants. This gathering marked a historical milestone by officially including travesti, trans, and non-binary identities within its organizing commission.
Activists expressed significant concern regarding the rollback of gender-based policies, such as Comprehensive Sexual Education (ESI) and legal abortion rights. Specific challenges were noted in Peru, where conservative sectors have moved to eliminate gender-focused sexual education guidelines and inclusive language in educational materials.
Analysts suggest that the female vote remains a critical political factor in resisting conservative shifts in countries like Argentina and Chile. The movement seeks to establish a regional plan of action to protect fundamental rights against the influence of leaders such as Javier Milei in Argentina and José Antonio Kast in Chile, as well as the political legacy of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil.
