Latin American institutions host debates on democracy and security

Various academic and civic institutions in Latin America are hosting forums to discuss democracy, security, and political power.

In Panama, the Universidad Especializada de las Américas (UDELAS) held a discussion on democracy and political power featuring jurist Harry Mitchell. The debate addressed concerns regarding electoral reforms, the erosion of citizen trust, and the impact of artificial intelligence on the workforce and critical thinking.

In Colombia, the Bogotá Council has scheduled an open town hall for November 7 at the Universidad Militar Nueva Granada. The meeting, which requires the attendance of Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán, will debate a proposal to allow temporary military assistance to support the police in managing serious public order situations. The initiative follows the validation of 37,056 signatures.

In Argentina, the Universidad de la Defensa Nacional (UNDEF) will host the third Strategic Forum on Hemispheric Security and Democracy on November 18. Organized by the Universidad Americana de Paraguay, the event will feature international experts discussing cybersecurity, the influence of extra-regional actors like China, and emerging geopolitical threats in the Americas.
