Latin American institutions issue alerts against rising digital fraud
Various institutions in Latin America have issued warnings regarding increasing digital fraud and phishing attempts targeting citizens through social media, messaging apps, and email.
In Mexico, Banamex launched a prevention campaign to alert customers about fraudulent links and applications. The bank noted that criminals use SMS, WhatsApp, and email to impersonate official communications, often requesting users to install apps to update or unlock accounts in order to steal financial data.
In Chile, the Investigative Police (PDI) warned of a massive WhatsApp scam. The fraud uses a fake 'Bono Mujer' of 100,000 pesos, purportedly funded by the government, to trick users into clicking malicious links that steal banking credentials and personal information.
In Uruguay, the Social Security Bank (BPS) alerted the public to fraudulent emails and QR codes regarding Fonasa refunds. The BPS emphasized that official refund information is only sent via specific institutional email addresses and that the agency never requests payments or sensitive data through unofficial channels.
