Latin American nations show diplomatic division at UN

During the United Nations General Assembly, Latin American nations demonstrated significant diplomatic fragmentation regarding regional sovereignty and relations with the United States.

Foreign ministers from the 33 members of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) issued a declaration calling for the next UN secretary-general to be from the region and reaffirming the area as a nuclear-free zone. However, a separate group of 14 governments, known as the Shield of the Americas, signed a joint statement with Washington titled ‘Defending Hemispheric Sovereignty,’ which seeks collective action against ‘narco-terrorist’ organizations.

Diplomatic tensions were further highlighted by the interaction between Venezuelan official Delcy Rodríguez and U.S. President Donald Trump. While regional leaders have historically reacted to Venezuelan electoral legitimacy with varying degrees of condemnation, recent observations suggest a shift in how Latin American leaders address the Venezuelan opposition and the role of U.S. influence in the region's democratic transitions.
