Latin American nations strengthen regional water security cooperation

Regional leaders and authorities are intensifying cooperation to address water scarcity and manage transboundary water resources in Latin America. In Montevideo, Uruguay, the Trilateral Plan Trifinio Commission (CTPT) discussed water resilience strategies involving El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. The CTPT has implemented various water harvesting and irrigation systems between 2020 and 2026, including projects that reduced water consumption in coffee production by up to 75%.

In Colombia, the II International Water Summit will be held in Cúcuta to address water challenges in the Gran Santander region. The summit aims to move from general agreements to a regional planning agenda focused on project identification and financing. A key component is the Academic Technical Table on Transboundary Basins, which fosters binational cooperation between Colombian universities and institutions in the Venezuelan states of Táchira and Mérida to better understand and manage shared watersheds.
