Latin American photographers receive international recognition
Latin American photographers are receiving international recognition for their unique approaches to visual storytelling.
Mexican photographer César Rodríguez won the World Press Photo 2026 in the ‘Long-term Project for North America’ category. His winning series, ‘México, un clima cambiante’, documents the impacts of climate change across Mexico, including water scarcity in Monterrey and coastal erosion in Tabasco. Notably, Rodríguez captured his work using a broken, second-hand camera, utilizing technical imperfections as an aesthetic tool to enhance the poetic atmosphere of his documentation.
Bolivian-Algerian photographer Daniel Mebarek has been named a Foam Talent 2026 and is a candidate for the Joop Swart Masterclass. His project, ‘Fotos Gratis’, features a mobile studio at the 16 de Julio market in El Alto, where he offers free portraits to passersby. The project serves as a tribute to traditional street photographers and explores the collaborative nature of the photographic act. His work was recently featured at the Les Rencontres d’Arles festival.
