Latin American right-wing leaders face declining approval ratings

Recent polling indicates a decline in support for several newly elected right-wing leaders across Latin America, including Peru, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina. Many of these administrations were elected on platforms centered on combating crime, revitalizing economies, and strengthening ties with the United States.

In Peru, President Keiko Fujimori’s approval rating fell to 40 percent from 57 percent in August. Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella saw a decline of more than three points during his first month in office. In Chile, President José Antonio Kast’s approval dropped to 30 percent, his lowest level since taking office in March. Argentine President Javier Milei has also reached record low approval ratings ahead of his re-election bid.

In Bolivia, President Rodrigo Paz faces significant unrest, with demonstrators blockading major cities due to fuel shortages. Conversely, El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele maintains high approval at 83 percent, supported by a significant drop in crime rates under a state of emergency.

Despite the dip in individual leader popularity, the AmericasBarometer 2026 report shows that support for democracy as a system has risen to 65 percent in the region, the highest level in over a decade. However, public satisfaction remains closely tied to economic stability, food security, and the absence of corruption.
