Latin American traditional dishes spark debate in food competition
Traditional Latin American dishes have recently sparked social media debate following a food competition organized by streamer Ibai Llanos. In the tournament, Venezuela’s pabellón criollo faced off against Colombia’s bandeja paisa in the quarter-finals. While the Colombian dish was eliminated, the Venezuelan dish advanced to the final, ultimately winning with 3,241,000 votes, narrowly defeating Peruvian ceviche.
The competition has highlighted the cultural significance of these dishes. The bandeja paisa, originating from Antioquia, consists of red beans, pork rind, chorizo, ground meat, egg, arepa, and avocado. In contrast, the pabellón criollo features shredded meat, black beans, white rice, and fried plantains, offering a balance of sweet and savory flavors.
Beyond the digital vote, the rivalry reflects broader discussions regarding national identity, the origins of traditional recipes, and how culinary heritage evolves through migration and regional proximity.
