Latin American universities lead regional rankings

Major Latin American universities have secured prominent positions in recent international academic rankings.

The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) ranked 84th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, making it the highest-ranked institution in Latin America and the only Argentine university in the global top 100. UBA achieved significant scores in Academic Reputation (34th globally) and Employability Outcomes (24th globally). However, the institution saw a decline in the International Networks indicator, which measures collaborative scientific publications with foreign institutions, potentially linked to domestic funding challenges.

In Mexico, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) maintained its status as the country's leading institution. In the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), UNAM placed in the 201-300 range, ranking second in Latin America behind the University of São Paulo. Additionally, the Webometrics Ranking placed UNAM 127th globally, making it the only Mexican institution to appear within the top 500 in that classification.
