Mexico economy reports 1.9% annual GDP growth and record FDI
Mexico's economy showed varied performance in mid-2026. According to INEGI, the country's GDP grew by 1.4% quarterly and 1.9% annually during the second quarter. Economic activity (IGAE) also rose 2.8% year-on-year in June. Inflation remained relatively contained, recorded at 3.26% for the first half of August.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) reached a historic high of $34.968 billion during the first half of 2026, a 2.1% increase from the previous year. The United States was the leading source of this investment, contributing $16.871 billion. Geographically, Mexico City received the largest share of FDI at $16.862 billion.
In other sectors, Latin American vehicle sales for light and heavy vehicles increased by 7.3% in July 2026. However, industrial construction in Mexico saw a 20% decline in July compared to the previous year, with new projects decreasing by 36% annually.
