Latin sees resurgence in Italian pop culture and social media
Latin is experiencing a revival in everyday Italian culture, extending beyond academia into books, songs, films, manga, comics and role‑playing games. The language, once deemed dead, now features in popular YouTube creators such as @scorpiomartianus, who posts performances in Latin, and other influencers from Vietnam, Germany and Italy who share daily life content entirely in the ancient tongue. Scholars note its deep roots in Italian vocabulary – about 14% of total words and over half of basic lexical items – and argue that the modern appeal reflects a desire for original content that also connects to cultural heritage.
The trend precedes the optional re‑introduction of Latin study in secondary schools and has sparked academic commentary. Luigi Galasso of the Università Cattolica di Milano and former papal latinist Francesco Lepore discuss Latin’s persistent relevance, while Professor Mario Lentano of the University of Siena uses the phenomenon to critique contemporary reinterpretations of classical myths, such as casting choices for Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of the Odyssey.
