Latina floods cause isolation and school disruptions
Severe storms hitting Latina between October 20 and 21 have caused significant flooding, leaving approximately 250 families isolated in the via degli Albizzi area. Mayor Matilde Celentano has issued an emergency ordinance to allow emergency vehicles access to the cut-off residential zone to ensure the safety of residents, particularly vulnerable individuals.
Water levels in the Colmata canal have begun to recede, with officials monitoring the situation closely. Technical teams are working alongside the Carabinieri Forestali to manage water flow through manual sluice gate adjustments, a process highly dependent on tidal cycles and sea conditions.
The flooding has also impacted the education sector. Patrizia Giovannini, provincial coordinator for the Gilda degli Insegnanti, has called for clear administrative guidelines regarding teacher absences and delays caused by the weather. She noted that some educators are unable to leave their homes and highlighted concerns regarding flooded school buildings and laboratories. While some institutions, such as the Galilei Institute, suspended classes independently, the Gilda is seeking uniform criteria to ensure staff are not penalized for force majeure circumstances.
