Latina province sees surge in road deaths and injuries, union urges safety overhaul

Data from the Italian Automobile Club (ACI) analysed by the UIL of Latina show a sharp rise in traffic accidents on the province’s main roads. In 2024 there were 311 incidents on the Appia and Pontina highways, up from 278 in each of the two previous years. Fatalities increased from 8 in 2022 and 10 in 2023 to 16 in 2024, while the number of injured grew to 483.

The most severe stretch is the Pontina at Aprilia, where 62 accidents resulted in three deaths and 98 injuries. The Appia corridor also recorded high numbers, with 35 crashes in Terracina (3 dead, 61 hurt) and 27 in Formia (2 dead, 33 hurt). Several provincial roads such as Borgo Piave‑Acciarelli and the Litoranea of Sabaudia each saw 12 accidents.

Union secretary‑general Luigi Garullo warned that “traveling the roads of the Pontine area is becoming increasingly dangerous” and called for an extraordinary investment plan to repave asphalt, improve signage and lighting, and set up a permanent coordination table with government and local authorities.
