Latvia alcohol restrictions prevented over 60 deaths

New data from the World Health Organization (WHO) European Regional Office indicates that recent alcohol accessibility restrictions in Latvia have significantly reduced alcohol-related deaths. Between August 1 and December 31, 2025, deaths directly attributable to alcohol consumption decreased by 27%, which corresponds to more than 60 prevented deaths.

The measures, implemented following amendments to the Alcoholic Beverages Circulation Law, include shorter retail hours, a six-hour waiting period for online alcohol deliveries, restrictions on alcohol advertising regarding prices and discounts, and limitations on using alcohol in trade promotion activities. Additionally, further restrictions were placed on alcohol sales in gambling venues.

Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri stated that these results demonstrate how evidence-based, responsible alcohol policies can save lives and create a healthier society. While Latvia's alcohol consumption remains at 14.2 liters of absolute alcohol per adult—higher than Lithuania (11.2 liters) and Estonia (10.4 liters)—the new measures aim to reduce physical availability and impulsive consumption.
