Latvia allocates €6 million to municipalities for energy‑efficient lighting

The Latvian state will allocate more than six million euros to local governments for the modernisation of public lighting with energy‑efficient LED fixtures. The funding, available to municipalities and their capital companies, is intended to reduce electricity consumption, lower municipal electricity bills and cut CO₂ emissions. Raimonds Kašs, director of the Finance Instruments Department of the Ministry of Climate and Energy, said the programme will improve safety, comfort and environmental performance.

Early participants report substantial savings: Kekava municipality replaced street lamps and saw a sharp drop in electricity use; Marupe municipality upgraded roughly 96 % of its old lamps, saving about €100 000 a year; Liepāja municipality reported lower bills, brighter lighting and an estimated annual CO₂ reduction of 620 tonnes. The initiative is expected to deliver significant cost savings and environmental benefits across Latvia’s local authorities.
