The Latvian government has approved controversial amendments to the basic and general secondary education standards. These changes significantly alter how student academic achievements are assessed, including the procedures for centralized exams.

Starting this school year, students in grades 4 through 9 are permitted to improve no more than one-third of their summative assessments in any given subject. Each specific assessment can only be improved once. The Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) stated that this limit is intended to prevent the reform from becoming a parallel system of repeated testing. Individual schools will be responsible for establishing their own specific procedures for how and when these improvements occur.

For students in grades 1 through 3, the reform allows for the improvement of each summative assessment once during the school year. The Ministry noted that for this younger age group, the approach is designed to provide timely support for mastering basic skills and encouraging learning progress.

Regarding centralized exams, the decision to potentially abolish the minimum passing threshold has been deferred to the next government.
