Latvia begins annual driving hunt season

The driving hunt season has commenced in Latvia, running from October 1 until March 31. During these collective hunts, participants use noise to drive game toward a line of hunters. The State Forest Service (VMD) has issued reminders regarding safety protocols and mandatory registration procedures.

All harvested animals must be registered via the ‘Mednis’ mobile application by the hunt leader or a designated hunter. During inspections, hunters must be able to present registration information for the animals, including when they are being moved.

The State Forest Service advises hunters and beaters to review safety requirements before every hunt, emphasizing that shots should only be taken at clearly visible and identified targets. They also urge caution during the early season when undergrowth is still thick and many foragers, mushroom pickers, and recreational walkers may be in the forest. For public safety, residents are encouraged to wear bright, visible clothing and avoid areas where shooting or loud noises are occurring.
