Latvia begins influenza monitoring season amid vaccine delays

The 2026-2027 influenza and acute respiratory infection monitoring season has officially commenced in Latvia. According to the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC), current infection rates are relatively low and slightly lower than during the same period last year.

Vaccine supplies in Latvia are experiencing delays due to a slowdown in the European production process. The National Health Service (NVD) attributed this to the late receipt of information regarding the specific influenza virus serotypes required for manufacturing. Consequently, the rollout of state-funded vaccinations is occurring gradually.

Several vaccines are being distributed to different groups: the intranasal 'Fluenz' vaccine has arrived for high-risk children and adolescents aged 2 to 17. Deliveries of 'Efluelda' for seniors and immunosuppressed individuals are beginning this week, while 'Vaxigrip' for other target groups is expected by November 13. Health officials recommend that citizens aim to be vaccinated by late October or early November to ensure protection before peak infection periods.
