Latvia Border Control Suspended at Pāternieki Checkpoint Over Technical Fault

Technical problems have disabled the information systems at the Pāternieki border‑control point on the Latvia‑Belarus frontier, making border checks currently impossible. The cyber‑incident response agency Cert.lv said the available data does not indicate any external interference and is supporting the investigation.

Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava urged travelers to use alternative routes and warned that the heightened migration pressure from Belarus could further complicate cross‑border movement. He noted that Estonia is sending additional border guards to reinforce Latvia’s outer border. The Latvian government has extended a heightened border‑security regime to several municipalities, including Ludza, Ludzas, Krāslava, Augšdaugava, Daugavpils and Rēzekne districts.

State border guard officials reported that 12,046 illegal crossing attempts were blocked recently, with 5,388 attempts thwarted in 2024 and 26 migrants taken in on humanitarian grounds.
