On 31 July 2026 Latvia closed its border with Belarus, stating that technical problems had disrupted the information systems at the Pāternieki‑Grigorowszczina checkpoint, rendering border control impossible. Interior Minister Janis Dombrava urged citizens to avoid travel to Belarus and to use alternative routes. The Cert.lv cyber‑incident response agency said there is no evidence of external influence on the affected systems. Estonia has agreed to send additional border guards to reinforce Latvia’s external border with Belarus. Latvia’s border guard service reported that it prevented 12,046 illegal crossing attempts in 2025, following 5,388 in 2024, and admitted 26 migrants for humanitarian reasons. The government has extended the heightened border‑guard regime along the Belarus frontier until the end of 2026 and allocated extra funds to strengthen the eastern border’s infrastructure, including fences, surveillance equipment, access roads and drainage works. The Pāternieki crossing is the only open checkpoint on the Latvia‑Belarus border, and its closure is part of a broader response to increased migration pressure that Latvian officials describe as a hybrid‑war tactic by the Belarusian regime.
