Latvia: Civilian injured during NATO military exercises

A civilian was injured by a bullet during NATO military exercises near Riga, Latvia, in March. The victim was struck in the back by a 5.56mm caliber projectile while walking through a forest near a military base.

Following an investigation by the Military Police, authorities decided to close the case, concluding that no crime had been committed. The investigation suggested the bullet may have been a ricochet after hitting another object from a long distance. The victim has challenged this decision in court, stating she continues to suffer from back and leg pain and is seeking financial compensation.

The incident follows other reported mishaps during NATO maneuvers, including injuries to Italian soldiers during shooting practices at the Adazi base in Latvia and paratroopers becoming stuck in trees during exercises in Belgium.
