Latvia evaluates Embraer A-29 Super Tucano for drone defense

Latvia is evaluating the acquisition of Embraer’s A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to bolster its air defense capabilities, specifically targeting drones and low-speed aerial targets. The Latvian Air Force is considering the turboprop aircraft not as a traditional light attack plane, but as an “airborne air defense system” to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) more cost-effectively than using expensive missile systems.

Major-General Viesturs Masulis has held discussions with Embraer representatives regarding the aircraft's potential role in modernizing Latvia's defense. To support this mission, Embraer is partnering with Valkyrie Aero to integrate the Gunslinger targeting system, which enhances the A-29's ability to engage small drones with precision.

While no final purchase decision has been made, the Latvian government has allocated over €1 billion toward strengthening air defenses. The country is currently awaiting a formal proposal from Embraer to determine if the A-29 will be included in its modernization plans.
