Latvia continues border infrastructure deployment despite sabotage

The Latvian State Border Guard is continuing the implementation of its ‘Automated Border Surveillance Infrastructure’ project despite targeted sabotage and natural challenges along its eastern borders with Russia and Belarus.

According to Commander General Guntis Pujāts, the damage to video surveillance equipment, distribution boxes, and cables is not random vandalism but “targeted action” intended to disrupt border security and delay the deployment of new technology. These actions are attributed to individuals supported by neighboring regimes.

Despite these provocations and damage caused by recent storms, construction remains on schedule. On the Latvian-Belarusian border, over 72% of the first stage (81.7 kilometers) has been equipped with modern technology. The project aims to enhance the ability to detect threats in real time, securing both Latvia and the European Union’s external border.
