Latvia holds parliamentary elections amid security concerns FAST-MOVING

Latvia is holding its 11th parliamentary election to elect 100 members of the Saeima for a four-year term. Approximately 1.5 million citizens are eligible to vote amidst concerns regarding national security and the rising cost of living.

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs and his centrist United List party currently lead in polls, with some estimates placing them at approximately 20% of the vote. However, the political landscape remains highly fragmented, and no single party is expected to secure an absolute majority. This will likely necessitate complex coalition negotiations to form a new government.

The election occurs against a backdrop of heightened security tensions due to the war in Ukraine and perceived threats from Russia. To ensure airspace protection during the voting period, Germany has deployed four Eurofighter jets to the region. While the Latvian State Security Service reported no systematic Russian efforts to influence the election results, voters remain focused on issues of defense spending, drone incursions, and economic stability.
