Latvia implements annual pension indexation

Latvia implemented its annual pension indexation on October 1, aimed at protecting purchasing power against inflation and reflecting wage growth. The indexation amount is determined by a coefficient based on an individual's insurance seniority.

For those with 30 to 39 years of seniority, the applied index is 1.0456, which is slightly higher than the 1.0451 index used in 2021. The maximum indexable amount is set at 1,589 euros. While the State Social Insurance Agency notes that the average increase exceeds 10 euros per pensioner, many recipients report that the adjustments are insufficient to cover rising costs for medicine, utilities, and food.

Some pensioners expressed significant hardship, noting that monthly payments as low as 383 or 440 euros force them to continue working or struggle to meet basic living expenses. Critics have questioned whether current state policies adequately address the needs of the elderly population in the face of economic pressures.
