Latvia implements winter speed limits on national roads

Starting Thursday, October 15, winter season speed limits will take effect on Latvian roads. The maximum permitted speed on most roads will be set at 90 km/h.

An exception applies to the Vidzeme highway (A2) section between Riga and Sigulda. On this stretch, adaptive traffic management using electronic signs allows for a maximum speed of 100 km/h during very good driving conditions. However, the system can reduce the limit to 90, 80, or 70 km/h if meteorological or driving conditions deteriorate.

Latvia State Roads (LVC) advises drivers to pay close attention to variable information signs, as conditions can change multiple times a day during the winter period. Electronic signs carry the same legal weight as standard signs, and violations are subject to fines. If electronic signs display no information, the default maximum speed is 90 km/h outside populated areas.
