Latvia initiative seeks to reduce Saeima deputies from 100 to 70

A signature collection drive has launched on the “Manabalss.lv” platform to propose reducing the number of members of the Saeima from 100 to 70. The initiative, led by Ričards Bumbērs, seeks to amend Article 5 of the Constitution to reflect Latvia's changing demographics.

Proponents argue that a smaller parliament would improve governance by increasing individual deputy accountability, reducing political fragmentation, and facilitating easier coalition building. The initiative suggests that with 70 deputies, there would be a stronger connection to regional voters and a more efficient parliamentary rhythm.

Economic arguments include potential budget savings. Based on 2026 salary levels, reducing the number of deputies by 30 could save approximately 1.5 million euros annually in basic salaries alone, excluding additional savings from assistants and other related costs.
