Latvia launches Operation Vilkatis to secure eastern border

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has announced the launch of Operation Vilkatis, a special security operation designed to strengthen the country’s eastern border against irregular migration. The Latvian government characterizes the surge in illegal crossings from Belarus as a form of hybrid warfare orchestrated by Russia and Belarus to destabilize the region.

The operation involves coordinated efforts between the State Border Guard, State Police, and the National Armed Forces. To enhance detection and apprehension capabilities, authorities will deploy advanced technologies, including unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), helicopters, and aircraft. Additionally, security forces will increase roadside vehicle inspections in eastern border regions.

Latvia is seeking to expand cooperation with Lithuania, Estonia, and Poland to curb secondary migration flows. The initiative comes amid rising pressure on the border; in mid-July, Latvia recorded 111 attempted illegal crossings in a single day. The government is also reviewing criminal penalties related to illegal border crossings and facilitating illegal residence rights.
