Latvia sports update: Basketball loss and volleyball championship finish

The Latvian men's national basketball team suffered an 80:115 defeat against Croatia in their first match of the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualification second round. Head coach Jānis Gailītis described the loss as “inevitable,” citing numerous errors and a significant disparity in free throws, where Croatia earned 44 attempts compared to Latvia's 14. The team looks to recover in their upcoming home game against Israel.

In volleyball, the Latvian women's national team finished 20th overall in the European Championship final tournament held in Istanbul. After competing in Group A, the team secured three points from five matches, including a victory against Hungary, but failed to advance to the knockout stages.
