Latvia Ministry of Health requires extra 3 million euros annually for medicine reserves from 2029
The Latvian Ministry of Health will require an additional 3 million euros annually starting in 2029 to maintain and replenish reserves of critical medicines and medical devices. This requirement is outlined in a draft protocol from a Cabinet of Ministers meeting related to new regulations for managing resource reserves during emergency situations.
Currently, for the years 2026 through 2028, the Ministry of Health has 3 million euros available per year for these reserves. This funding is provided via a transfer from the Ministry of Defence budget under the “Maintenance of the National Armed Forces” subprogram. However, officials noted that current funding is limited.
The proposal to grant additional funds from 2029 onwards will be evaluated during the state budget preparation process based on the country's financial capabilities. To maintain fiscal conditions, any increase in spending may require compensatory measures, such as revenue increases or cuts in other expenditure areas.
In a separate context, Deputy State Secretary Boris Knigins informed parliamentary committees that the Ministry of Health is seeking an additional 826 million euros in next year's budget to meet identified needs and priorities.
