Latvia mobile networks disrupted by storm-induced power outages
Severe storms in Latvia have caused widespread power outages, leading to significant disruptions in mobile communications and internet services across the country. Major operators, including LMT, Tele2 Latvija, and Bite Latvija, confirmed that their customers experienced connectivity issues. LMT reported that approximately 3% of its connections were affected, particularly in the Latgale, Zemgale, and eastern Kurzeme regions.
The outages have impacted critical infrastructure, including the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD). In some regions, both mobile and radio communications failed, forcing the service to implement contingency plans using service brigades to maintain communication. NMPD Director Liene Cipule noted that the service must re-evaluate its readiness for communication breakdowns following these difficulties.
Telecommunications companies stated that while base stations are equipped with batteries, physical constraints on rooftops and limited space prevent universal battery coverage. To combat prolonged power loss, operators are deploying diesel generators and mobile base stations. Technical teams are working continuously to restore service, though fallen trees and flooded areas have hindered access to some station sites.
