Latvia prepares for new school year with support initiatives and legal clarifications
As the new school year approaches in Latvia, the State Education Development Agency (VIAA) and the Ministry of Education and Science are launching a series of online discussions to support students and parents. The discussion cycle will cover topics such as supporting children's emotional well-being, school safety, assessment methods, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in learning.
Regarding school expenses, legal clarifications have been issued to distinguish between mandatory school provisions and individual student needs. According to legal expert Jānis Dzanuškāns and the Ombudsman, the principle of free education dictates that schools must provide materials necessary for the mandatory curriculum, such as textbooks, workbooks, and practical lesson materials. Conversely, parents remain responsible for individual supplies, including pens, pencils, stationery, and sports clothing.
