Latvia prepares for Teachers' Day amid gift debates

As Latvia approaches Teachers' Day on October 5, discussions have emerged regarding appropriate gift-giving for educators. Parents have suggested various gestures, ranging from simple autumn flower bouquets, coffee, and chocolate to personalized items like pens or homemade treats. Some parents argue that no gifts should be given at all.

Gift-giving is subject to specific regulations in certain areas. In the Riga City Council, teachers at municipal educational institutions are prohibited from accepting cash, gift cards, or other cash equivalents. Collective gifts from students are permitted.

In addition to gift etiquette, educators are noting significant shifts in the classroom environment. Teachers report that modern students struggle with long-term concentration and prefer fast-paced, interactive learning over traditional lectures. There is also a noted trend where students seek practical applications for knowledge and, in some cases, show a decreasing awareness of the world around them.
