Latvia: Prime Minister leads government formation and cinema funding plans
Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs is leading efforts to form a new government following the 15th Saeima elections. President Edgars Rinkēvičs has tasked Kulbergs with the responsibility of government formation. Negotiations are expected to focus on a government declaration prioritizing national financial stability, economic growth, state security, and public administration reforms. Political parties, including the 'United Unity' faction and 'Latvian Green Party', have expressed readiness to participate in consultations once invited.
Regarding specific sector support, Kulbergs has pledged one million euros to the cinema industry starting in 2028. The Prime Minister intends to review how funds are allocated and is considering a new financing model. He suggested evaluating whether to replace the current streaming platform tax with measures that encourage foreign film producers to film in Latvia, noting interest from major entities like Warner Brothers. The exact funding sources for the proposed cinema support remain to be determined.
