Latvia proposes extending visa and entry restrictions for Russia and Belarus

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has proposed extending restrictions on visa applications and entry for citizens of Russia and Belarus until December 31, 2027. The current regulations are set to expire at the end of 2026.

The Ministry justifies the extension by citing the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, the unpredictable geopolitical situation in the region, and the necessity of strengthening Latvia's internal security, public order, and international relations.

The proposed regulations maintain existing exemptions for specific categories. For Russian citizens, visa applications will still be accepted for family members of Latvian citizens, family members of EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens, individuals entering for humanitarian reasons, and those with existing residence rights in Latvia. For Belarusian citizens, long-term visa applications will continue to be accepted for specific categories, including family members of Latvian citizens.
