Latvia pushes pediatric care and eye‑screening for children

Health officials in Latvia stress the importance of regular pediatric visits, noting that experienced pediatricians play a crucial role in monitoring a child's physical and mental development, providing nutrition advice, vaccination schedules and early treatment of illnesses. The Alpino Pērle practice in central Riga offers a child‑friendly environment, modern facilities and remote consultations to reduce stress for families.

A systematic review covering over 37,000 children in 14 European countries found that about 18 % have clinically significant refractive errors, underscoring the need for routine vision checks. Parents are advised to watch for signs such as frequent eye‑rubbing, holding books close to the face, avoidance of reading, and rapid fatigue, which may indicate uncorrected nearsightedness or astigmatism.

Early detection and treatment through pediatric and eye‑screening services aim to prevent long‑term visual problems and support healthy development for Latvian children.
