Latvia pushes to make August 15 a national holiday for the Assumption of Mary
A citizen initiative posted on the portal Manabalss.lv, represented by Lauris Baurovskis, has sought to declare 15 August—the Feast of the Assumption of Mary—as an official public holiday in Latvia. Over more than a year the campaign gathered fewer than 800 signatures, well short of the threshold needed for a parliamentary proposal.
Baurovskis argues that a dedicated holiday would reinforce spiritual culture, strengthen family ties, and boost regional tourism, especially in sites such as the Aglona Basilica where hundreds of pilgrims traditionally gather for the celebration. He notes that many European countries already observe the day as a public holiday and suggests that Latvia could benefit from similar cultural and economic effects.
