Latvia Saeima reviews scientific research funding and utility

The Saeima Public Issues and Revision Commission recently evaluated the utility of various research projects funded by the Latvian Council of Science (LZP). While the commission focused on the practical application and commercial value of recent studies, discussions largely bypassed approximately 20 million euros spent on research commissioned by state institutions since 2020.

Commission Chairman Kaspars Melnis highlighted specific projects, including social science studies regarding Wolt and Bolt couriers, life in Latgale, and gender discourse. In response to criticisms regarding the immediate commercial value of such work, LZP representatives explained that the goal of fundamental and applied research programs is to generate new knowledge and ideas that serve as a foundation for future commercial projects.

Over the past four years, 101.1 million euros have been distributed to various research projects. Additionally, representatives from the Latvian Academy of Culture noted that scientists and institutions have received threatening letters, raising questions about the current climate regarding scientific expertise in the country.
